Stuart Lawson

Striving for the cutting edge, while keeping things simple and organized.

About Stuart

I was born in Pretoria, South-Africa, and have been using Adobe Photoshop and computers since I was 6 years old. Ever since I've become highly skilled in all things multimedia, and keeping up to date with the most cutting-edge trends. After high-school I was lucky enough to land a job for a local (and highly successful) Landscape Architectural Firm: Lifescapes International, Inc. At Lifescapes I started from the ground up, but we eventually had a full fledged Graphics Department, doing everything from Presentation Boards, Image Boards, Printing, Color Management, and Booklet Design... to Digital-Coloring of architectural plans, Promotional Videos, Scanning, and Photography. Working at Lifescapes gave me the drive to always improve my work ethic, organization skills and worth as a Graphic Artist. For the past four years I have also been involved in intensive projects for Iocaine Studios and eventually decided to devote all my time to the computer game company- a dream come true as I was invited to be a co-owner of the company, and as such the Lead Artist. Working at Iocaine Studios has given me immeasurable experience as an Graphic Artist in the multi-billion dollar computer games industry and just how much it takes to start and run a business.

Interview

Describe your ideal work environment. (08/18/2007)

My ideal work environment would allow me the best possible tools for what I do in a clean and orderly environment, free of non-work-related distractions or interruptions with friendly, drama free co-workers. Ideally I would work the hours in which I am most productive, instead of the usual 8-5, perhaps 10-8. Any hardware, software, or equipment would leverage the speed at which I work, and therefore the best possible environment would supply me with cutting-edge technology and equipment, especially as that is what I am used to using.

Describe a time when you have had to overcome a challenge. (08/18/2007)

In some parts of the work at Lifescapes, we were expected to come up with a full Presentation Board, Image Board, and colored Graphics in under a week for a project. Sometimes though-the due date for the project was cut short, and we only had three, two, and on rare occasions one single day to finish all that was required. Needless to say we stayed late (ordered pizza) and sometimes had to take shortcuts, sometimes mistakes were made, but all in all we made the deadlines without any major problems. Those were definitely the most challenging times.

What are you most passionate about? (08/18/2007)

I am most passionate about music, but when it comes to work I am most passionate about how the work gets done. My work ethic maintains an organized, efficient "get things done" outlook.

How would your co-workers describe you? (08/18/2007)

I am quiet, friendly, but I focus on work. I enjoy social aspects of the job and any social gatherings outside of work, but when it comes to getting things done I like to keep it professional. I like to keep my things clean and orderly, and I don't step on any others toes. When I am working on something I enjoy, I am in my element, and thus prefer not to have many distractions unless it is a team-effort, which I enjoy too.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? (08/18/2007)

I have dreams of having my own music production studio (I am halfway there) and hope to be continuing my quest to learn as much as possible about all forms of multimedia.

What did you learn from your previous job? (08/18/2007)

My previous work experience has given me a strong understanding of management skills, production, design, the importance of effective communication, the importance of good management, the importance of keeping things organized, as well as innumerous multimedia skills.

What are your strengths? Weaknesses? (08/18/2007)

My strenghts involve good communication skills, the ability to adapt and deliver on tight-deadlines, the ability to understand other's point of views and take them into careful consideration. I get along with just about everyone and am generally a very hard, driven worker. I am a good instructor, have plenty of patience, and know how to teach/train effectively. I know how to constructively critique, and how to take harsh criticism. My weaknesses would involve mathematics or anything to do with complex numbers, though I understand math fully and have done extensive number crunching for marketing purposes, I am slow at it, I am an artist and as such have not fully developed the other side of my brain quite yet (but I am slowly getting there)

Why did you choose this career? (08/18/2007)

I was naturally driven towards the visual arts since I was young, and so it has always been a continual interest of mine to improve my skills in all forms of multimedia, especially as I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of design.
